Chapter 10

When Julie returned home, Clark Riverton’s car was parked in the driveway. He and Luke were having a conversation in the living room. The girls were still having a water fight in the backyard, and at times the hose sprayed the picture window in the dining room. Julie was upset that Luke had not been paying close attention. Screams were echoing all around the neighborhood.

“Nice to see you, Julie, I’m Clark Riverton.” He said extending his hand. “I’m semi-retired, in charge of the violent crime task force here in San Diego County. Luke has asked me to come over and give you some advice, and shed some light on what has gone on so far.”

Annoyed, Julie spoke quickly, one eye on the mayhem in the backyard.

“That’s fine, but—” she gave a stern look at Luke. “You’re not paying attention to the girls. Do you know that kids and adults can drown in three inches of water? These girls are out there totally unsupervised.”

Luke got up, quickly checked out the window and turned back to her. She could tell he was going to disagree with her and wasn’t happy with her criticism.

“Julie, I’ve been watching them all day. I took those fucking girls to the store, I bought a ton of specialty food, I’ve been cooking for them, I’ve been cleaning the fucking house until my hands are sore and raw, I’ve been working my ass off. I can’t even take a nap because there’s nobody here to watch them, and—”

“So, whose fault is that?” she asked him.

“Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. Hey folks,” Riverton started. “I don’t want to intrude on anybody’s feelings here, but I don’t think this is a good time. I think I’ll come back later, on another day.”

“No. You stay right here.” Both Julie and Luke said in unison.

Julie raised one additional question to her husband.

“And I thought we were supposed to go down to the school tonight or did you forget about that, Luke?”

He was getting more irritated. Still standing, with his hands on his hips he barked back at her, “I rescheduled it for tomorrow. You said it was going to be hard for you to make it tonight, so I rescheduled it and instead we’re meeting with Detective Riverton. Don’t you think that’s a higher priority?”

Just then they both heard somebody screaming in the backyard. Someone was in pain. Julie of course thought the worst.

“God damn it.” She said as she raced through the living room and out through the kitchen door onto the patio. Luke and Riverton were left behind and had no time to respond before she was outside. All kinds of horrible thoughts went through her mind as she searched the yard and the patio and the pool and discovered that Amy had fallen down, and skinned her knee, red blood flowing all over the place. She mumbled under her breath, “Where’s a fucking medic when you need one?”

She looked up at the living room window and screamed, “Luke, get out here and bring your kit.
